Musicians, it's time to rest.

Musicians often hear about the importance of practicing, performing, and listening to music. However, there's something equally important for musicians that we don't talk about as often: rest. Just as regular practice on our instruments is essential for our success, so is rest. It's important for both our bodies and minds to get proper rest. Sometimes this means taking time off of the flute - and that's okay!

Physical Rest

Playing our instruments puts our bodies into a posture that doesn't come naturally to our bodies, so it makes sense that it our bodies need rest once in awhile. To help give your body the rest it needs, try doing some upper body stretches before and after you practice. Also, make sure you're drinking plenty of water and getting a good night's sleep most nights.  These strategies will all help your body rest, and your musicianship will get even better!

Mental Rest

Sometimes, we need a break from practicing because our minds need a break. Playing music is very enjoyable and rewarding, but it also is hard work - especially when we're trying to learn a new skill or piece. To rest our minds, it is helpful to do something relaxing that we enjoy. My favorite forms of mental rest are reading a good book, going for a walk, and baking. Try making your own list of things that you enjoy and do some of them over the winter holidays to help your mind rest.

Finding Balance

How do we find balance between resting and practicing? Not practicing for the whole break might slow down our progress, but taking a few days off here and there won't. I try to take one day off a week for rest. Also, I don't practice on major holidays because I value spending time with my family instead. After holidays are over, I'll start practicing regularly again. This is a good balance for me and my goals. Ask yourself what might be a good balance for you. Enjoy your rest days and your practice days - both are important!
