As a musician with a decade of private lesson teaching experiencing and over two decades as a student enrolled in private music lessons, I know firsthand the power and impact that they can have on musicians' development. As a young flutist, I was given the opportunity to embrace my individuality, self-accountability, creativity, independence, and joy in private flute lessons. Research has shown time and time again the power of music positively impacts our brains, bodies, and emotional wellbeing. I believe that music lessons not only build and refine a musician's ability, but also create opportunities for musicians to build confidence, embrace their whole selves, and positively impact their community around them.

What do you private lessons offer that flutists do not already receive in music class at school?

Private lessons offer a unique, one-on-one experience for flutists to receive individual and personalized instruction according to their interests. While school music classes like band are amazing and so important, classroom music teachers only have so much time to spend on certain topics, pieces of music, or student concerns - private lessons can meet all of these needs and more.

However, I understand that there might be some confusion about why private lessons offer and why they are essential. I hope to answer these questions here.

What do musicians learn in private lessons?

In private lessons, musicians have the opportunity to work with a highly-skilled professional musician who has made a living through performing and teaching music. As a professional, I offer insights into not only the fundamentals of playing my instrument, but also the opportunities that await musicians of all different ages and experience levels. Private lessons can help successfully prepare for additional music opportunities such as solo recitals, NMEA All-State Band, solo competitions, and regional/national honor ensembles.

Will private lessons help musicians be successful in band or other music classes?

Private lessons will help musicians be successful, confident, and self-assured in their school music programs. This will help them demonstrate leadership in their instrument section, ensemble, and more. It will also help them tackle new challenges in their musical lives with courage and enthusiasm.
