Helping flutists move

Frustration freedom

from

Hi there! My name is Dr. Madi,

and I believe that playing the flute can be an incredibly empowering and creative experience for music students.

I also know that it can be incredibly frustrating, too! I'm here to help alleviate that frustration and help flutists find

freedom, confidence, creativity, & community.

Home: Welcome

Teaching

I offer private flute lessons to students of varying ages and abilities based in the greater Omaha, NE area.

I love working with students who are excited about the flute and love music!

Body Mapping

As a Licensed Body Mapping Educator, I help my students find freer and easier movement through the study of anatomy.

Research has shown that Body Mapping can help flutists increase their confidence and understanding, as well as improve their playing!

Performing

I love to share my artistry with my community through performances with the Payadora Trio and local solo performances in Nebraska.

Our latest album, Payadora, comes out July 15th!

Learning to play the flute can be

HARD!

Flute students can experience a lot of frustration when learning to play this instrument - I know this because I did, too! The flute can be frustrating for a few reasons. Let me know show you why...

Flute is unlike any other instrument in the band...

Unlike the clarinets and saxophones which have some similarities because they both use reeds or brass instruments which share similar lip formations and note fingerings, the flute is the only instrument in the band where the player must blow across a hole to create a tone. After they accomplish their first sounds, they must create consistent and flexible lip formations that allow them to play at various volumes and with a variety of colors.

Flutists must have highly developed movement senses to play their instrument...

Unlike other instruments that you can see while you play them (piano, percussion, even some brass and woodwind instruments), flutists can’t see any movement they use to play their instrument - this movement occurs inside their mouths as well as in their fingers which as we’ve already discussed happens out to the right side of their bodies, out of their line of sight.

Flute is an asymmetrical instrument...

The flute sticks out to the right of the player which means they are having to learn entirely new body and hand positions to allow them to successfully play their instruments. How many of us regularly hold our arms out to the side of our bodies for extended periods of time? The answer is not very many!

Flutists are expected to play a lot of really fast and really high notes...

For my non-flutist readers, you should know that fast and high notes are pretty much the hardest skills on the flute. And yet, many composers write music for flute that has both fast and high notes. This music often gets selected within a flutist’s first year of learning the instrument because it works well for an entire band ensemble, but is still incredibly difficult for the flute. Flutists are expected and encouraged to be proficient fast and high note players and this is a really advanced skill that sometimes gets neglected in larger band classes as our wonderful band directors do their best to manage an entire room of musicians with different instruments, needs, and questions.

Making sound on the flute often takes students longer than other instruments...

Unlike any other wind instrument in the band, flutists make sound by blowing across a hole instead of straight through the instrument itself. This means that making our first sounds can be time-consuming and frustrating! The flute isn't a harder instrument than the others, it just takes a different timeline for many students to consistently make sound. This can become frustrating quickly when surrounded by other instruments that are making sounds from day one.

See what I mean?

But don't be discouraged because I've been there too and I am here to help!

About Me

I've been playing the flute for about 18 years and I have been teaching music for over a decade!  Music has been a part of my life before I can remember, and by the time I was 14 years old, I knew I wanted to teach and perform professionally. My passion for helping musicians cultivate their own moments of creativity, inspiration, and confidence has become one of the most fulfilling joys of my life. For this reason, I offer private flute lessons & workshops in the greater Omaha-area, and I offer Body Mapping lessons, workshops, and clinics locally and online nationally.
